Britain’s Jodie Swallow ended her World Cup season with a dominating performance to win the Tongyeong ITU Triathlon World Cup in South Korea today, 16 October.
The 29 year old from Brentwood, Essex, led from start to finish, setting the pace during the 1500m swim and then breaking away early on the moderately hilly 40km bike course. She held on for a 90 second victory after a superb solo effort.
The win was her first ever in an ITU World Cup and placed her ahead of triple Olympian Anja Dittmer of Germany and Spain’s Ainhoa Murua.
She said: “It’s amazing really, I wasn’t really expecting it.”
Commenting on her break away effort, she said: “If I’m off the front then I work as hard as I can, and I think the person that works the hardest should win. I never know that I’ve got the race, ever.
“Even as a kid running cross country I was always off the front but always thought I would get run down, that’s the way I am. I never relax and I think that’s a good thing. I keep working.”
Swallow started the flat 10km run with a lead of more than two minutes. However, the field that included European Championship silver medallist Carole Peon and Australia’s World Under 23 Champion, Emma Jackson, had no chance of catching her.
Ireland’s Aileen Morrison finished 4th.
