There’s a saying about buses that definitely applies to last weekend. We will, soon, get to the exploits of the TriPurbeck athletes at Ironman Wales but before that – 24hrs before that – several of us were in Milton Keynes for the Big Cow National Sprint triathlon Championships.  So here’s the run down. Justin was racing for a qualification slot for the European Champs in Geneva, Derek was also looking for a slot, Fran was supposed to be doing a training session – presumably for Challenge Weymouth although I’ve spoken to her before about leaving her training too late, I was there because I accidentally entered when I thought I was buying an inflatable big cow on ebay and Guy was there because he hasn’t actually entered a race this year!

First off in the young blokes wave, Justin blitzed the swim, exiting with the leaders. Unfortunately he forgot to go out training on his bike and despite a quick run split he couldn’t quite get amongst the qualification slots. The 2 wheel bling on show was really gobsmacking and there’s no doubt that a bit of training would put Justin in contention with the fastest chaps in his age category. Guy forgot that he was a really fast swimmer and let everyone else go first, then got drafted by a bloke on a Sunday morning ride with panniers, before putting in a decent run to finish smiling in 20th place in his age group. I got a bit annoyed with a bloke in the swim who kept punching me in the head before Derek caught me up on the bike which was nice and ran my way into 20th in my category but mostly i was just pleased to race without injury issues for the first time in a while. Fran (still in training for Challenge Weymouth) also got mashed in the swim before a customary destruction of the bike course and a jog round the park to finish a fairly remarkable 3rd in a totally alien event for her. But, performance of the day definitely came from Derek with a good swim,  destructive 33min bike split and an excellent run that was good enough to take the National Champioship in the 60-64 age category and a Q1 slot for the European Championships in Geneva next year.
