We’re in full swing now – TriPurbeck racers racing everywhere. Except Guy of course. The juniors kicked it off on Friday night with a TriPurbeck double at the Upton Park summer series run with Sam Brown winning the senior men’s race and Serena O’Connor winning the senior ladies race – and they’re both 15! Lola Brown – just to add to the party – won the junior girls race as well – very impressive.

Onto Sunday and Mandy was lining up for the Swashbuckler middle and Simon was going for his first standard distance event – this presents a whole new set of challenges if you are a diabetic…….Great performance fromMandy who appeared to benefit from a bit of bike position adjustment to clock an excellent 5hr41min time – starting to bode well for the Wales return…….. Simon also had a great race and learned a lot from the experience – racing and transitions are complicated enough without throwing in the odd blood test………here’s Simon’s race report:

Unfortunately, they started the race early and that was only about a minute after the last lot of us got into the river via the slow single file entry point. So not enough time for me personally to get warmed up and used to the conditions. I managed to keep the freestyle going although still need to work on relaxation as didn’t feel comfortable with my breathing throughout. However, I did the 1k swim in about 25mins which I was pleased with despite being just about the last person to finish – nothing new there!

Then a 400m run up to transition and blood sugar check and insulin jab before jumping on the bike.  Great bike course – very scenic and good open roads – managed to overtake quite a few competitors and the odd herd of ponies in the road!  Got back to transition for another blood sugar check – very high ….prob explains why my heads spinning and feels like it’s going to explode!  Sugar in the energy drink during the bike obviously worked a lot quicker than the earlier jab.  Time for another quick jab before setting off on the run.  Great traffic free roads to run on and got past quite a few more people before finishing the 11k back at Buckler’s Hard village.

Good free food provided in the marquee afterwards was a nice touch.  Overall a very enjoyable race, great atmosphere, fine weather and glad to have completed the longer distance!

Thanks to the team for all the great coaching!
