Dave Pratten is clearly out to prove that he is one srewdriver short of a toolbox………..while most people were generally staying indoors thinking ‘it’s a tad on the wet and windy side out there’, TriPurbeck’s 2014 Norseman entrant was down in Devon on an ultra course not a milion miles away from where the sea had washed away a train track and a small village. My advice is stay inside in the warm – Dave’s only 25 – that kind of wind takes its toll on the skin – I don’t care what kind of moisturiser you’re using……..

This was my second ultra of the winter 38 miles along the South West coastal path from Beesands to Salcombe via Start Point. The weather forecast and travel problems meant that most race entrants withdrew but the race organisers have a motto ‘Never, never, never give up’ so about a hundred of us set out on the ultra course on Saturday morning.

It is fair to say that the going was ‘soft’ underfoot and the wind was phenomenal at times. Rain, hail and showers of sea foam!  Going around Start Point I along with the other participants was reduced to crawling on all fours.

After about 25 miles I teamed up with a group of 4 Blackheath Harriers and we ran the rest of the course together for safety reasons. We crossed the finish line together in 6hours 51 minutes all more or less in one piece. Great fun!!

For the record 31st overall and first and only finisher in my age group.
